Turn a single sock into a full hand puppet with almost no sewing.

The fastest project on the site, and the only one that starts with something already in your house. This is a whole-hand puppet rather than a finger puppet, which makes it a good next step once someone's outgrown the smaller patterns — or a good first project for an adult helping a younger sibling.

What you'll need

1 old sock, any size
Fabric glue
2 buttons or googly eyes
Scrap felt for a tongue

Steps

Turn the sock inside out and cut a small slit roughly one-third down from the toe.
Push the toe of the sock through the slit to form the puppet's upper and lower jaw.
Turn right-side out and glue a scrap of red or pink felt inside as a tongue.
Glue on buttons or googly eyes above the mouth opening.
Let dry flat for 15 minutes, then test opening and closing the mouth with your hand inside.

Common mistakes

Cutting the slit too close to the toe, which leaves too little fabric to form a lower jaw.
Skipping the felt tongue — the mouth opening looks unfinished and slightly upsetting without it.
Gluing eyes on before checking hand placement, so they end up looking sideways once worn.

Variations to try

Use a striped sock and let the stripes become 'teeth' along the mouth opening.
Add yarn hair glued along the heel seam for a shaggier character.
Turn a pair of matching socks into a two-puppet argument-ready set.
