What you'll need

• Fine-weight yarn, 2 colours

Steps

1. Crochet the body as a tapered tube, working in the round from tail to snout.
2. Add a light stuffing as you go, keeping the shape slim enough to fit a finger.
3. Crochet four small triangular spines separately and attach along the back.
4. Crochet two wings flat, then stitch to the body at a slight upward angle.
5. Attach safety eyes or embroider simple features onto the snout.
6. Weave in all ends and steam-block gently to help the wings hold their shape.

Common mistakes

• Over-stuffing the body, which distorts the tapered shape into something closer to a sausage.
• Working the wings too loosely, so they flop rather than holding the blocked angle.
• Skipping the steam-blocking step, which is what actually gives the wings their final shape.

Variations to try

• Alternate spine colors down the back for a jewel-toned, scaled effect.
• Crochet a longer tail and let it coil around a second finger for a two-handed pose.
